Cocktails with Confidence: the Kenneth

Being a bit of a manchild, I never really learned how to cook. Oh sure, a burger, a basic salad, a steak, top ramen, little bits of choziro with brie on top (I'm serious - DELICIOUS. Also not proscribed for anyone planning on running or biking a significant distance afterwards.), basic stuff. Nothing that would blow you or a romantic date away.

However, being in the Rock Industry, I have developed a healthy alcoholism over the years, and being a Classy Gentleman, I can't just be drinking Jim Beam out of the bottle 24/7. So I've become something of an amateur mixologist, and I wanted to share a little concotion with you today that was developed in lovely Astoria and should be imbibed by anyone who loves our little country.

It's called the Kenneth and it is, yes, named for Kenneth Cole. It's based loosely on the snooty-sounding "Greyhound" and needed an even snootier name. If you're having a Kenneth Cole reaction*, don't rush to the hospital, just fix yourself one of these. They are DELISH.

You'll need Diet Tonic Water**, Grapefruit Juice, Pomegranate Juice, Lemon Juice (best fresh, natch), and the Vodka of your choice. I recommend the delicious and eminently affordable Luksusowa (to my knowledge, this website is not endorsed by any brand name vodka, though I guess it would be sort of awesome if we were, maybe?). And ice.

Fill yer presumably pre-chilled glass up with ice, mix in one quarter vodka, one quarter diet tonic water, one quarter grapefruit juice, one eighth lemon juice, and then just a splah of pomegranate - don't go too heavy on it. Finally, add more vodka, depending on how hard you live life. Stir with a straw or a fork or whatever you have laying around the house, and: ENJOY!

I find this drink goes very well with tacos from the St. James Deli on 34th St and 34th Ave, arguably the best tacos in the outer boroughs. Do not consult me as your health specialist!

So next time you want to impress your friends, mix them up a Kenneth and raise a glass to the Astoria rock scene.

* Remember those subway ads from, like, 1998? How tacky were those?

** If using non-diet tonic water, the drink is properly called the Lane Bryant. Did you know though that diet tonic water tastes exactly like tonic water but has 0 calories? True!
