Journeys of Sonic Discovery: Ry Cooder is Super Terrific

Often when I was a little kid I would listen to albums with my dad. Once he played a copy of Ry Cooder's Chicken Skin Music and explained that Cooder was great because he mastered so many different styles of traditional American music, and was able to arrange them for a listening public who would otherwise never had heard any of it. He also allowed the music to retain its integrity. At the time I thought C&C Music Factory was the best thing on the planet, so I didn’t give two shits. But in my older and wiser years I have come to love Ry Cooder’s work. The guy is incredible.

When he was still a teenager, he got his start with an early incarnation of Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band. If you’re familiar with Beefheart, you know how weird and cool this fact is.

Apparently working with Captain Beefheart was a horrible experience. According to Wiki: 'Ry Cooder recounted of [Guitarist Doug] Moon becoming so angered by Van Vliet's unrelenting criticism that he walked into the room pointing a loaded crossbow at him, only to be told "Get that fucking thing out of here, get out of here and get back in your room", which he obeyed.' Rock music used to be so cool.

Originally from the album ‘Chicken Skin Music’, Cooder’s cover of Ben E King’s ‘Stand By Me’ is a fantastic showcase for that froggy-ass voice of his. His voice is definitely idiosyncratic and may take getting used to, but I grew up listening to this stuff, so it gets me all nostalgic.

What really thrust Cooder into the spotlight was his work in the late 90s with Cuban legends Buena Vista Social Club. This album won Cooder both a Grammy and a $25,000 fine from the federales.

He later cut an album with Manuel Galban, a Cuban guitarist who also worked with Cooder on Buena Vista Social Club. The album is called Mambo Sinuendo and it’s fantastic – it sounds like Cuban son, jam music, surf rock, and Afro-Cuban jazz all tied up in one groovy, futuristic package.
